Fueling Up with Fats

Lesson 5 · 7 min

Fats have gotten a bad rap. While trans fats and saturated fats might deserve this reputation, not all fats are bad for you. In fact, we need some fat for energy and to help our cells grow. Plus, fat helps us feel full and satisfied with our meal.

Fat is more calorie dense than other nutrients, though. One gram of fat has 9 calories, compared with 4 calories in 1 gram of protein or carbs. When eating fatty foods, be mindful of your portion size and aim to eat the right types of fat, especially if your doctor is recommending weight loss.
