Lesson 2- Foods That Most Affect Blood Sugar Levels and Clever Ways to Include Them image

Spotting Your Blood Sugar Triggers

Lesson 2 · 7 min

As you go through this journey it’s important to understand which foods affect your blood sugar levels and figure out how you can include the foods you love in a healthy way.

To visualize how food affects your blood sugar, imagine driving up and down a big hill. When you eat, the carbohydrates from the foods you choose make your blood sugar levels climb, like driving up that hill. Then the hormone insulin kicks in, gradually bringing those blood sugar levels back down the hill.

When you live with diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or the insulin you have doesn’t lower your blood sugar very well. So your blood sugar stays too high — perched at the top of that hill.

You need to give your body a little help getting back down the hill. One way to keep your blood sugar levels at a healthy level is by giving some careful thought to the types, and amount, of carbs you eat.
