Selecting Smart Snacks

Lesson 8 · 6 min

It’s fair to say that many of us snack. We reach for a little something when we’re hungry, bored, distracted by the TV, or we just need some sugary or salty comfort.

Snacking and desserts aren’t all bad. Eating small amounts of nutritious food like fruit or nuts before or after meals can prevent the blood sugar dips that can lead to hunger and food cravings. And by choosing snacks and desserts carefully, you can add some extra nutrition to your diet.

Let’s look at some of the more nutritious snack options to munch on if you have high cholesterol.

Fast fact

U.S. adults get up to 24 percent of their daily calories from snacks. Many people who snack eat more calories each day than those who don’t. The exception is people who snack on whole fruit. They have lower daily calorie counts.
