An IBD flare can last weeks or months, and it can feel like it’s wreaking havoc on your day-to-day routine. So, understanding how to manage it is imperative.

When experiencing a flare, and especially once it has passed, be gentle with yourself. Learn what coping and recovery methods work for you, from diet to relaxation techniques. Lean on your support people, and give yourself time to heal emotionally and physically.

According to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, in a typical year, 48 percent of people with ulcerative colitis are in remission, 50 percent have mild to moderate active disease, and 2 percent have severe symptoms. Half of those with Crohn’s disease will be in remission or have mild disease over the next 5 years, 35 percent will have one or two relapses, and 11 percent will have active disease.
