Diet breakdown: Which foods raise cholesterol?

High fat, animal-based foods are notorious for raising cholesterol. But some foods in this category are better for you than others.

Foods to avoid include:

  • fatty red meat like steaks, roasts, ribs, and ground beef
  • processed meats such as sausage, hot dogs, and bacon
  • whole milk, cheese, ice cream, and other full fat dairy products
  • fried foods
  • baked goods and sweets

Here are a few healthier picks:

  • fish and shellfish like shrimp and crab
  • chicken breast (grilled or broiled, not fried)
  • eggs
  • low fat dairy such as yogurt and lighter cheeses like Swiss and mozzarella
  • organ meats such as kidney and liver

Wondering how exercise can help? Let’s talk about that.
