Handling bloating and gas
Gas is a universal issue. We all produce it in our intestines as we digest food. Some of us release that gas from time to time. As embarrassing as a stray belch or fart might be, usually it’s short-lived and directly related to something we’ve eaten.
With IBD, gas is a bigger problem than usual. Because your intestines don’t digest food very efficiently, the undigested food sits in your colon, where bacteria gobble it up and release — you guessed it — gas.
When that gas gets trapped in your stomach and intestines, it bloats you like an overfilled balloon. Bloating can be very uncomfortable, but there are things you can do to relieve it.
