- The U.S. hit another record for highest number of daily deaths from COVID-19 this week. At least 3,915 people died from COVID-19 in the U.S. on January 6, the most in a 24-hour period since the pandemic began.
- More cases of the new more infectious coronavirus variant have been identified in the U.S. In the last week, officials in Texas, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania have all announced that they have identified people with the variant.
- Japan has issued a state of emergency due to the spread of COVID-19. The government is asking residents to avoid any nonessential travel in order to stop new infections.
