- The White House issued a vote of confidence that COVID-19 vaccines are effective against a new coronavirus variant called the lambda variant, which is causing concern among health experts. The WHO has called it a “variant of interest” because it has mutated in a way that might make it more transmissible among humans.
- COVID-19 cases in Japan are surging again, with cases in Tokyo reaching a 2-month high, according to ESPN. Due to the increase in cases, the government is expected to announce a state of emergency that will last for the duration of the Olympics. The games are slated to open on July 23.
- President Biden again pushed for all eligible people in the U.S. to get vaccinated against COVID-19, emphasizing the importance of being protected against the rapidly spreading delta variant. The administration is now hoping that family doctors will encourage people to get vaccinated as massive vaccination clinics are being shut down in favor of more targeted outreach.
