In a Nutshell
I’ve always showered at night. I love the feeling of washing the day off and getting into bed all nice and clean. The thought of putting my head down on the pillow with unwashed hair skeeves me out. 😖

But is there a “best” time to shower? Do morning or night showers offer more benefits, if any? Keep reading to find out, plus which side the Healthline team stands on. (We want to know your preference, too!)

Are you on Team Morning or Team Night Shower?

Let’s cut right to it: There’s no scientific evidence that suggests there’s a “best” time to shower. (Now, if we’re talking about shower water temperature, that’s another story with research available to back up health claims.)

Ultimately, it boils down to whatever time works best for your schedule and lifestyle. However, morning and night showers may offer different benefits, some of which our team highlights below.

Why we like morning showers ☀️

“I am exclusively a morning shower person! I can’t function during the day without starting with a shower. It makes me feel more awake, clean, and relaxed to start my day. I will add that if I have a day where I get really sweaty or something, I will shower a second time.” — Mandy French, editor

“I’m a morning showerer out of routine and convenience, but I LOVE a nighttime shower as a treat. It really helps me feel cozy and wind down before bed.” — Lily Frew, editor

The case for night showers 🌙

“I’m not a morning person, so I don’t have the motivation to shower first thing. Plus, I find that showering helps me wind down and signals that it’s almost time for bed. I’m so used to my routine that I think it’d make me too sleepy in the morning!” — Amy McLean, editor

“I’ve switched back and forth throughout my life. For several years, I was an early-morning workout person and had to shower after that. It also made me feel fresh and ready to take on my day. Nowadays, with a toddler, it’s harder to exercise in the morning, so I find myself showering more often at night. I think it really depends on whichever makes you feel your best!” — Ren Dias, editor

Why not both? 👀

“As someone who lives in NYC and doesn’t have to pay for water, I do both on a perfect day: one at the start of the day (cold or warm water) to wake me and wash off after a morning workout and again in the evening (warm or hot water) to wash off the grime of the city and all the worries of the day.” — Timothy Mojica, social media marketing manager

Showering tips (no matter the timing)

Consider keeping this advice in mind for actual health benefits:
  • Use warm water: Hot water may feel nice, but it’s more likely to dry out your skin and aggravate inflammatory skin conditions, such as psoriasis or eczema.
  • Add a blast of cold water at the end: Though it might not sound the most pleasant, a dose of cold water may help promote healthy skin and hair, increase circulation, and wake you up (if needed).
  • Use gentle soaps and cleansers: Aim to avoid harsh scrubs and heavily scented products, especially if you have sensitive skin.
  • Take shorter showers: The American Academy of Dermatology recommends limiting your showers to 5 to 10 minutes, especially if you have dry skin or an inflammatory skin condition.
  • Pat dry: After your shower, try not to rub your skin with the towel, as this can dry it out and damage its moisture barrier, which is what helps your skin hold onto moisture.
  • Follow up with a moisturizer: To help lock in moisture after a shower, aim to apply it within a few minutes of toweling off.
