| When the clocks fall back on Nov. 1, many of us will be wrapping up our workday at dusk, if not nighttime. Less daylight can mean less opportunity for your skin to produce vitamin D, an essential nutrient that helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus, keeps your bones strong, and supports muscle and immune function. |
|
|
| Even during the sunny months, it can be tough to get enough vitamin D since food sources are limited and sun exposure increases your risk of skin cancer. Supplementation is often recommended to hit your daily dose. |
| There’s one detail worth checking on the label: whether it contains vitamin D2 or D3. |
| Your body can use both forms, but research suggests that D3 raises circulating vitamin D levels more effectively and helps maintain them for longer. Vitamin D2 is typically made from yeast or fungi, while D3 is produced from animal-derived sources (or, in some supplements, lichen). |
| Pro tip: Vitamin D supplements may be most effective when taken with a meal or snack containing some fat. |
