IN A NUTSHELL
If you’ve been reading Wellness Wire for a while, you might remember me writing about how coffee and I don’t exactly have the best relationship. It tends to give me jitters, worsen my anxiety, and keep me up until 2 a.m. if I drink it past noon.

After taking a long break, I recently got back on the coffee train, but this time, I’m relying on a handy amino acid to avoid these side effects: L-theanine. Keep reading to learn more about how it’s been helping me.

WHAT’S GOT US BUZZING

L-theanine is my coffee sidekick

L-theanine is an amino acid that’s mainly found in green and black tea and one type of wild mushroom. A 2024 review found that consuming around 200 to 400 milligrams (mg) may help relieve symptoms in people with anxiety disorders. Another smaller, self-reported study from 2008 suggests that it can help reduce high blood pressure from drinking caffeine, but not mood, anxiety, or jitters.

More research is needed to confirm the potential benefits of adding L-theanine to coffee, but the combo is gaining traction on Reddit and TikTok for managing caffeine-related side effects.

I decided to give it a try a few months ago, especially after reading up on L-theanine on our own site. After all of this time “testing,” I’ve found that it works extremely well for me! No more anxiety, scatterbrain, shakiness, or staying up until 3 a.m. And no lifestyle overhaul needed. This liquid supplement has become a seamless addition to my daily routine.

Every morning, I make a fresh batch of French press coffee with (strong) local beans, then I squeeze some unflavored L-theanine into my cup. I’ve noticed that I get the usual coffee benefits like improved focus and concentration, plus a nice, calm, stable energy throughout the day. Even if I drink it until 2 p.m., I’m fighting to keep my eyes open at night before I finally fall asleep around 10. (Maybe because L-theanine is supposed to be a natural sleep aid as well.)

⚠️ While L-theanine is generally safe to consume, it’s best to speak with a healthcare professional if you’re pregnant, nursing, or receiving cancer treatment before trying it yourself. To learn more about this supplement, check out our full article below.

Mindful L-Theanine Drops
This is the liquid supplement I use every day! It’s unflavored, so it doesn’t alter the taste of my drinks — real secret stuff. I add a one-second squeeze (200 mg of L-theanine) into my morning coffee, then I’m good to go. I even started carrying a bottle in my bag just in case I get a latte from a coffee shop on a whim. If you’re anything like me and coffee doesn’t always treat you kindly, I highly recommend trying it. You can also add it to a glass of water, a cup of tea, or another drink of your choosing.
